Alma Charles Aguilar, a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 1, 2023, in Alice, Texas. Born on April 28, 1938, in Palito Blanco, Texas, to Martin and Vicenta Charles, Alma was a cherished member of a large and close-knit family.

Alma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Erasmo Aguilar; her parents, Martin and Vicenta Charles; her brother whom she raised like a son, Johnny Charles; her brothers, Arcadio "Cano" (Maria) Charles, Servando (Aida) Charles, and Roberto Charles; her in-laws, Guadalupe and Sabas Aguilar; her son-in-law, Nicolas G. Cantu; her brothers-in-law, Johnny Buentello, Richard Martinez, Alfredo Aguilar, and Henry F. Uribe; and her sisters-in-law, Lorenza “Chacha” (Durwood) Hatch, Delma Aguilar, and Dalia Aguilar. Alma is survived by her loving children, Alma (Luciano Jr.) Buentello, Adalinda Cantu, Arlene Aguilar, and Anabel (Janie) Aguilar. She is also survived by her siblings, Arturo (Rebecca) Charles, Martin (Noemi) Charles, Leonel (Janie) Charles, Albesa Buentello, Senaida (Henry) Cortez, Guadalupe (Raul) Elizardo, Emma Charles, Diana (Alonzo) Sandoval, and Elia Martinez.Sisters-in-law, Beatriz Charles, Viola Arreguin, Georgia Uribe, Lupita (Gabriel Jr.) Estrada, and Emma (Deacon Armando) Botello Sr. also mourn her passing. Alma's legacy lives on in her 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends. Though Alma's formal education ended in the 5th grade, she was a lifelong learner and hard worker. She earned her Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Certification and spent many yearsworking in the fields picking cotton. Alma also took great pride in her work as a homemaker, where she excelled at cleaning, cooking, and creating a warm and welcoming environment for her family and friends. She particularly enjoyed celebrating and decorating for all holidays, continuing her parents' tradition of fostering family unity. She also worked at Hospitality Nursing Home for many years, where she lovingly and compassionately cared for her patients. In her free time, Alma found great joy in reading and working on puzzles. She was known for her generosity, often going out of her way to help those in need. Alma's kindness and love for her family and friends were evident in every aspect of her life. Alma will be remembered as a loving, generous, and kind soul who touched the lives of many. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her memory will live on in the love and kindness she shared with everyone she met. Alma’s family will receive condolences on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Trevino Funeral Home, 120 E. Front St.; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:00 PM. The family will continue to receive condolences on Monday, June 5, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Trevino Funeral Home. A funeral cortege will depart the funeral home at 1:00 PM for Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 1:30 PM, followed by Rite of  Committal and Interment at New Collins Cemetery.

Honoring Alma as pallbearers are Benjamin Buentello, Nicolas Cantu, Joel Trigo Jr., Michael Trigo, Cody Aguilar, Luciano Buentello Jr., Jesse Starkey Jr., and Joshua Garza. Honorary pallbearers Luciano Buentello Sr., Jennifer Trigo, Amanda Cantu, Ashley Starkey, Amy Cantu.
