Arthur “Artie” Allen Mathis, Sr., of Corpus Christi, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at the age of 103. Artie was born in San Antonio, TX on February 2, 1922, to Luther Coleman Mathis and June Juanita (Henning) Mathis. Artie and his family would soon move to Corpus Christi where he would attend M Menger Elementary School, Wynn Seale Junior High and graduate from Corpus Christi Senior High School in 1941. In 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served until 1944, as a Medic in Panama, Central America. Artie Mathis was married to the love of his life, Mary Florence (Marrs) Mathis on October 5, 1946. They were married for over 77 years. They settled in Corpus Christi to raise their 3 children and ran M&M Sales Company until retirement in 1988. During this time, he was a member of the Corpus Christi Restaurant Association for several decades. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Corpus Christi where he raised his children and grandchildren. Artie enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing, and spending time at the family ranch in Pipe Creek, TX.
Artie Mathis is survived by his two sons, Allen (Deanna) Mathis of Mathis, TX, James (Cindy) Mathis of Pipe Creek, TX; his son-in-law, Roy Chapin of Amity, Oregon; and grandchildren, John (Melissa) Mathis, Brenda (Reese) Hunt, Kyle (Katy) Mathis, Karen (Dan) Myers, Kathy (Rich) Slack, Mark Chapin, Debbie (Kraigg) Howlett, Crystal Mathis, and Aaron (Stephanie) Mathis. At the time of his death, Artie had 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Artie is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Florence Mathis; and daughter, Carolyn "Cammy" (Mathis) Chapin of Oregon. Special Thank You to the caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living.
