Obituary

In Loving Memory of Aurora Mungia Alviar

Aurora Mungia Alviar was called home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on June 17, 1938, to her loving parents, Francisco and Belia Mungia, Aurora was blessed with a long and beautiful life deeply rooted in faith, family, love, and togetherness.

Aurora shared her life with her beloved husband, Sotero G. Alviar, and together they built a beautiful family that became the center of their lives. They were blessed with five children, Sotero Jr., Simon, Neomi, Mario, and Roel, whom they raised with love, faith, sacrifice, and a strong devotion to family. Aurora and Sotero worked hard throughout their lives to provide for their children and to create a home where family was always welcomed, and time together was treasured. As the years passed, they had the joy of watching their family grow through their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Through celebrations, family gatherings, travels, everyday moments, and even times of hardship and loss, Aurora remained a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and matriarch. The family she and Sotero built together became one of their greatest accomplishments, and the love, strength, and values they passed on will continue through the generations that follow them.

Aurora was a proud graduate of William Adams High School, Class of 1958, in Alice, Texas. She continued her education at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she earned a degree in Vocational Nursing. Following her education, Aurora devoted nearly half a century to serving and caring for others as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), a profession that reflected her compassion, dedication, and lifelong commitment to helping others.

She began her nursing career at Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) Hospital in Alice, Texas, serving at various nursing stations before staying in the operating room, where she spent the rest of her career. She later continued her service at Alice Regional Hospital and Christus Spohn Hospital until her retirement. Aurora often referred to her OR colleagues as her “second family,” reflecting the lifelong friendships she formed and her dedication to caring for others.

She enjoyed the beauty of Garner State Park, traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada, and visiting many other places throughout her life. Aurora also had a special love for music and enjoyed attending concerts, including those by George Strait and numerous others. One of her favorite pastimes was finding antiques at flea markets and garage sales and shopping at the Goodwill “Thrift Store”.

While our hearts are saddened by her passing, Aurora's life is not defined by this moment, but by the love she gave, the family she helped build, the memories she created, and the lives she touched.

As we continue to love one another and carry her memory with us, we find comfort in our faith and in knowing that the love we shared with Aurora does not end here. We hold on to the promise that one day we will be reunited.

Aurora was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Francisco and Belia Mungia; her loving husband, Sotero G. Alviar; her grandchildren, Shelia Ann Alviar, Aaron Aziel Garza, and Jo Dana Alviar; her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Andrew Alviar and Luke Aziel Garza; her nine siblings; and other cherished family members and loved ones who went before her.

Aurora leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her four sons and one daughter, Sotero Alviar (Sandra), Simon Alviar, Neomi Alviar Garza (Lupe), Mario Alviar (Mona), and Roel Alviar (Maria Dolores); as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Guadalupe Mungia Chavarria; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Her greatest joy was her family and the love, traditions, and memories she shared with them will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind.

Aurora’s family will receive condolences on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Treviño Funeral Home Alice, 120 E. Front St., from 4:00 PM until 8:30 PM, with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue Friday, November 6, 2026, from 8:30 AM until 1:30 PM, and a funeral cortege will depart to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at 1:30 PM to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Roberson-Collins Memorial Cemetery where Aurora will be laid to rest in the peace of Christ.

Honoring Aurora as pallbearers will be Roel Alviar Jr., Matthew Mauricio Garza, Alaina Alviar Sisserson, Mario Alviar Jr., Jacob Andrew Alviar, and Joshua Gabriel Valadez Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Zachary Raphael Garza and Rolando Rene Garza.

Until we meet again, may she rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.
