Delia Garza Perez (85) was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, February 19, 2021. She died peacefully surrounded by her four beloved children.
Delia was born in Benavides, TX on January 23, 1936 to parents who worked the cotton farms of South Texas. She and her six siblings joined their parents in the cotton fields at a young age. This experience brought the family close together and instilled the importance of family to young Delia. She was the serious sidekick to her comedian twin brother Red (Dario). To her sisters, she was a trusted confidant and they all remained best friends through their lives.
Delia was known for her kindness and generosity; her home was open to anyone in need of a place to rest. She was an avid reader, a hobby she carried throughout her life, reading the paper every day, clipping stories, and discussing current events with her family. She had an abiding Christian faith and she thanked God for each day she was with us.
Delia’s favorite jobs were being a mother and a grandmother. She never turned down an opportunity to baby sit any of her six grandchildren and was overjoyed that she was able to meet her eight great-grandchildren. Delia was happiest providing a home where the extended family could spend holidays together. Extended family also included the numerous nieces, nephews, and their extended families from Dallas, San Antonio, and New Braunfels. You always had a seat at the table and a hot meal at the Perez Family home.
When Delia spent time outside of her home, it was to help others. She worked in the Ben Bolt Palito Blanco school cafeteria, the Community Action Senior Center, and the Workforce Office in Alice. Each of these jobs brought her lifelong friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Marcelo V. Perez; father, Dario Garza; mother, Angela Saavedra Garza; brothers, Oscar Garza, Leocadio Garza, and Dario Garza; sisters, Elva Cañas, Diana Cantu, and Dora Gomez.
Among those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Gloria D. (Kirby L.
