Edwardo Cervantes Jr. passed away on July 23, 2018 at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Minerva Cervantes of 63 years; his parents Edwardo and Dora Cervantes; his devoted daughter, Dora Almazan; his beloved grandchildren, Christopher Gabriel Moreno and Rudy Hinojosa, Jr.; and his sons-in-law, Joe J. Perez and Jesse Garcia.
After being orphaned as a child, Edwardo was blessed to be raised by Pedro and Estefanita Arambula in Laredo, Texas. His adopted parents and siblings, Feliza Suarez, Hortencia Rocha, Eudelia Alvarado, Esperanza Arambula, Bernardo Arambula, Francisco Arambula have also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children, Olivia Perez, Edward Cervantes III (Marie), Maria Alicia Moreno, Anita Perez (Albino), Margaret Hinojosa (Rudy), Jesse Cervantes (Laura), Diana Villarreal, Maria Elena Cervantes (Joe Flores) and his son-in-law, John Almazan.
Edwardo was a pastry chef who was an apprentice under the guidance of Manuel Blanco Suarez in Robstown, Texas. His first job was at La Heroica Panaderia when he was 14 years old. After learning the art of baking Mexican pastries in Robstown, Edwardo traveled on his bicycle to Corpus Christi, Texas and learned to make wedding cakes and traditional American and German pastries from Jack Gates of Gates Bakery. In future years, he worked at Wilkins Bakery, Polanco Bakery, the City Bakery on 19th Street, the Corpus Christi Country Club, the Corpus Christi Town Club, and the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas. After retirement, he dedicated himself to baking delicious wedding cakes, pies, pastries, and Pan de Dulce. Most notably, the Pan de Polvo Cookies that he baked for family and friends every holiday season.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to David Salinas, Sr., Gloria and Albert Gonzalez, Deacon Armando Botello from Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, special care nurses Julie, Rosalinda, and Kathy, social workers Allison and Brandy, and Minister Abel from Kindred Hospice for the care they provided to Edwardo.
Honoring him as pallbearers are John Edward Moreno, Joe Jay Perez Jr., Roy Anthony Hinojosa, Alex Sanchez, Andrew Macias, and Joshua Villarreal.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, July 27, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Treviño Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara at Port Ave.; where a holy rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. A chapel service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 9:00 am at Treviño Funeral Home. The funeral cortege will depart the funeral home chapel at 9:30 a.m. to Memory Gardens Cemetery for a Rite of Committal and Interment.
