Elmer James Griggs

Elmer James Griggs passed away Friday, May 22, 2020, at Doctor’s Regional Hospital.  A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, he attended Holy Cross and Booker T Washington Elementary Schools, Northside Junior High, and graduated from Solomon M Coles High School in 1965.  He also attended Del Mar Technical College.

Following graduation from high school, Elmer joined the United States Army and served honorably for 13 years as a Combat Medic and Licensed Practical Nurse. He served two tours in the Vietnam War as a Combat Medic.  He was also a HVAC technician for Sears and later became an EMT.

At an early age, he joined Calvary First Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. H.C. Dilworth serving as an usher.  Later, as an ordained Elder, he pastored Faith Temple of Christ Deliverance Church for over 30 years.  He married Libertad Sotillo on June 21, 2003.

He is preceded in death by his father, Mack Griggs; stepfather, Artis Amerson; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Libertad Griggs; daughter, Angela Shackleford (Aubrey); step-son, Charles Pulsford; mother, Rosa Amerson; brothers, Carl Sanders (Beatrice), Ronald Griggs (Lenora), and Charles Griggs (Janet); sister,  Wanda Dailey (James);  four grandchildren, Shantel, Malia, Christopher, and Jossilyn; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends.

The family will receive condolences on Monday, June 1, 2020  from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara St.; with a Chapel Service to begin at 12:00 PM.  Interment will follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery.
