Obituary

Enemencio “Mencho” Salinas, fondly known as “Popo” by his grandchildren and many friends, was a cherished soul whose gentle spirit, sense of humor, and love for life touched all who knew him. He passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in Alice, Texas. Born on October 27, 1935, in Brooks County, Texas, Mencho lived a full and meaningful life marked by his deep passions, unwavering dedication to his family, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.

A man of simple pleasures and profound devotion, Mencho found joy in growing vegetables in his garden and caring for the animals he loved. During his retirement years, he spent countless hours tending to his vegetable garden, proudly growing fresh produce for his family to enjoy. He often joked with his grandchildren that he not only grew vegetables, but also “grew chicken nuggets,” a playful remark that never failed to bring smiles and laughter. His love extended beyond the garden, as he raised chickens and ducks, and cared for many cats over the years, finding comfort and companionship in the animals that surrounded him.

Mencho also enjoyed the world of Western movies and television shows, especially Gunsmoke. The stories of rugged landscapes, hardworking people, and strong family values reflected the qualities he carried throughout his own life.

Mencho is survived by his loving family that continues his legacy of kindness and strength. He leaves behind his children, Edna Alicia Rivera, Michael Salinas, and Enemencio (Rose) Salinas Jr.; his siblings, Josefa Cadena, Armando (Tina) Salinas, and Manuel (Teresa) Salinas; as well as 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Each shared a special bond with him, shaped by his strength, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to his family.

His passing also reminds us of loved ones who preceded him in death, including his devoted loving wife of 65 years, Estela P. Salinas, whose memory remained a cherished part of his story, and his son, Jose L. Salinas, whose absence was deeply felt, along with numerous brothers and sisters.

Enemencio “Mencho” Salinas lived a life rooted in family, hard work, and love. Whether tending his garden, caring for his animals, watching a favorite Western, or sharing a laugh with his grandchildren, Popo left an impression on everyone he met. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know and love him.

Rest in peace, Mencho. Forever known as Popo to his grandchildren and friends, your story will live on in the hearts of your family for generations to come.
