Federico Leal Cano, affectionately known as "Popo," passed away at the age of 74 on September 14, 2024, at his home with his family by his side in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on April 22, 1950, in Kingsville, Texas, Federico led a life marked by deep devotion to his family and dedicated service to his country.
Federico served bravely in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. Following his military service, he committed 37 years to Sherwin Alumina Company, where his hard work and dedication were widely recognized.
A devout member of Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Federico's faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through both joyous and challenging times. He enjoyed cheering on his beloved Houston Astros and Houston Oilers/Texans and found pleasure in completing Sunday crosswords and word searches. His greatest joy came from attending his grandchildren's sports activities and spending quality time with his great-grandchildren, family, and friends.
Federico was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Eliza Cano, and his twin daughters, Valerie and Velma Cano.
Federico shared a remarkable and enduring partnership with his wife, Velma, to whom he was married for over 53 years. Their marriage was a testament to unwavering love and mutual respect, serving as a pillar of strength and support throughout their lives together. Their bond was a source of inspiration to their family, embodying the values of commitment and devotion.
Federico is survived by his loving wife Velma Cano. He leaves behind his oldest son, Federico Cano Jr. and wife Marie; his daughter, SanJuanita Ogle and husband Tim; his son, Victor Cano and wife Maggie; and his son, Jose Panfilo Cano and wife Michelle. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Federico Cano III, Mikayla Vera (Jesse), Shawn Ogle (Sandra), Velma Pollard (Brandon), Valerie Ogle, Jase Galbreath, Justin Ogle, Isabella Cano, Joseph Cano, Elisa Cano, Jagger Cano, Kilian Cano, and Karsen Cano, as well as five great-grandchildren. He is also mourned by many loving friends.
Federico's life will be celebrated and remembered for the profound impact he made on the hearts of those around him.
Federico’s family will receive condolences on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Treviño Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara St. @ Port Ave, from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM that evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. Rite of Committal and Interment with full military honors will follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
