Fidela V. Martinez, affectionately known to many as Nana, passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 20, 2025, in Corpus Christi, Texas, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on June 6, 1949, in Petronila, Texas, Fidela's life was a testament to her faith-filled, loving, and selfless nature.
Nana's journey began as the cherished daughter of Alfredo Antonio and Esther Y. Villarreal. Though she now joins her parents and her siblings, Raymond Gonzalez, Alfredo Villarreal III, Rodolfo Benavides, Virginia Weatherly, and Margarita Villarreal in eternal rest, her spirit is carried on by her loving family. She leaves behind her siblings Esther Reyes, Irma (Ramon) Garcia, and Ismael (Maria) Villarreal, as well as her devoted daughters, April (Robby) Flores and May (Johnny) Martinez. Her legacy also includes her adoring grandchildren, Lisa (Oscar) Rodriguez and their six children, Eric (Crystal) Luis and their two children, Joshua (Jessica Austin) Gonzalez, Dallas De La Cruz, Antonio Gonzalez, and Jessica (Donovan) Morissette and their baby; along with three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life.
Fidela's heart was always with her family, from marrying Ciriaco Martinez on October 19, 1967, in Houston, Texas, where they welcomed their first daughter April, to moving back to Corpus Christi to care for her parents and giving birth to her second daughter May. Her dedication to family extended beyond her immediate circle, as she became a pillar of support, relocating to care for her sisters and their children. Nana's presence was a beacon of reliability and love; when called upon, she was there without question.
Her home was a sanctuary, not only for her family but also to all who crossed her threshold. As a devoted member of Second Baptist Church, Fidela found great joy in her faith community and cherished her monthly dinners with the church ladies. Her service to others extended into her community where she was a second mother to many, especially the neighborhood kids on Golla Street.
Nana's interests were simple yet profound in their ability to bring happiness to her and those around her. She relished in sitting outside, basking in the fresh air, and enjoying the company of her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Flores. Her love for a house brimming with family was evident in the way she nurtured relationships, watching her family expand and flourish over the years. She found delight in playing cards with her grandkids, immersing herself in the dramatic twists of her novelas, and exploring new cultures through K-dramas with her great-granddaughters.
Fidela's life was one of unwavering devotion to her faith, to her family, and to her community. Her selflessness knew no bounds, and her capacity to love was endless. It is with both heavy hearts and a celebration of her life that her family and friends bid her farewell, knowing that her influence will continue to resonate through the many lives she touched.
Nana's presence will be profoundly missed, yet her spirit will live on through the cherished memories she created with each person she encountered. Her life was a beautiful mosaic of service, compassion, and unconditional love—a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide her family for generations to come.
As we say goodbye to Fidela V. Martinez, we take comfort in knowing that she has found peace and rest, leaving behind a world that is infinitely better for having been graced by her presence. Her light, though no longer with us in body, will forever shine in the hearts of those who loved her.
