Obituary

Genaro Martinez Jr., “Jerry”, a devoted servant of God and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026. Born on September 29, 1950, Genaro lived a life rich in service, faith, and family, leaving behind a legacy marked by kindness, dedication, and love.

For many years, Genaro worked with Hygeia Quality Check, a role through which he touched countless lives with kindness and reliability. His journey later led him to the open road as a bus driver for Continental Trailways and Greyhound Express VIP, where he greeted each passenger with a warm smile and steadfast professionalism.

More than his professional achievements, Genaro’s heart belonged to his ministry work. For over 25 years he volunteered with the Kairos Prison Ministry, an endeavor close to his soul. As a one-of-a-kind servant of God, he dedicated much of his time while incarcerated to leading men to the Lord, embodying the spirit of Matthew 25:36: “I was in prison and you came to visit me.” His commitment was fueled by deep study of the word of God and he enriched this calling with his talent in music ministry, touching hearts through song and the strum of his guitar.

Music was a cherished part of Genaro’s life. He loved to play his guitar and sing at any occasion, filling rooms with joy and harmony. When not immersed in faith or music, he delighted in fishing, indulging in BBQ cookouts, and showcasing his prowess as a great cook—his meals were as nourishing to the soul as they were to the palate. He also enjoyed watching Western movies and television series, especially the classic book Lonesome Dove, whose stories of friendship, courage, and adventure resonated deeply with him.

Genaro’s legacy is carried forward by his beloved wife of 38 years, Mary Alice Martinez, whose steadfast companionship was a source of strength and comfort throughout their life together. He is also survived by his devoted daughter, Victoria M. Whitney, and her husband Lance, as well as four grandchildren who brought boundless joy to his later years, Jeremiah Martinez, Jubilee Whitney, Journey Whitney, and Jemalei Whitney.

He also leaves behind his siblings, Jesusita, Irene (Thomas), Rosa (Ramon), David (Janie), Rudy, and Joe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Genaro Martinez Sr. and Sylvia Vega, as well as his brother, Juan Martinez.

The life of Jerry was one of heartfelt service, profound faith, and loving generosity. His gentle spirit and tireless dedication to ministering to others continues to inspire all who knew him. Though he has passed from this world, the melodies of his guitar, the warmth of his cooking, and the light of his faith will forever resonate in the souls he touched. Our “Honey”, “Hanito”.

May you rest in eternal paradise as you dwell in the house of the Lord forever, see you soon!

A memorial service celebrating Jerry’s life will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at Pursuit City Church; 1602 Baldwin Blvd., Corpus Christi, Texas 78404.
