Herlinda "Linda" Chavez

Herlinda “Linda” Raquel Chavez of San Benito, Texas, was welcomed into eternal life by her heavenly father on Saturday March 19, 2022, at the age of 74. She was the second born, of six children, to Robert and Sofia Leal in Corpus Christi, Texas. Linda was a graduate of W.B. Ray High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Bilingual Education from Texas A&I/A&M University, Corpus Christi.

Linda married Domingo H. Chavez and become a devoted military wife. She began her teaching career in South San Antonio Independent School District then moving on to work for the Corpus Christi and West Oso School Districts. She retired from teaching while working for the Brownsville Independent School District after 20 plus years of service. As an educator, she was involved in various projects outside her regular teaching duties including participating in the Textbook Advisory Committee and the Site Based Decision Making Committee. She was also instrumental as a U.I.L. coach for various academic competitions. She was a dedicated teacher who loved and taught her students as if they were her own children.

Linda was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and sister. She was a devout Christian and humbled. She was a woman of strong faith and conviction. She often made contributions to organizations such as the Marines Toys for Tots Campaign, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and The Wounded Warriors Project. She always thought of everyone and thought about making them feel important all of the time.

She enjoyed family get-togethers, especially during the holidays. She also enjoyed spending time with her son, her daughter, and her granddaughter. Linda was a skilled artist and enjoyed doing creative work. She enjoyed listening to the music of Josh Groban and treasured music of the 50’s. She enjoyed shopping and watching sports as well as game shows in her spare time.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her two daughters, Adrianna and Andrea and two brothers, Carlos and Isauro (Chago) Leal.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Catherine Chavez from San Antonio; her son, Domingo Chavez III from San Benito; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Calderon from San Antonio. She is also survived by two sisters, Cindy (Ray) Ortiz and Delia (Ray) Marichalar; one brother, Robert Leal, Jr., all from Corpus Christi. She also had several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

The family will receive condolences on Saturday, March 26, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara @ Port Ave; with a Memorial Rosary to be held at 12:30 PM. Services will conclude that same day.

Face masks must be worn, and social distancing must be practiced while attending services at this facility.
