Hilda P. Sanchez

Hilda P. Sanchez, a beacon of strength and wisdom, graced this world with her presence on June 2, 1928, in Kingsville, Texas. Her journey on earth came to a peaceful close at the young age of 95 on April 21, 2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit that inspired all who knew her. Born to Costula E. Perez and Angelita Perez, Hilda was the vibrant centerpiece in a family that included seven brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. Her light continues to shine through her devoted children, Juan P. Sanchez (Aurora), Richard Sanchez (Irma), Abel P. Sanchez (Ruby), Ray Sanchez (†Gracie), and cherished daughter Lydia Hurley. Hilda's love blossomed into a beautiful lineage of 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and a precious great-great-grandchild, each a testament to her boundless love and nurturing spirit. Hilda's early years were spent in Cuero, Texas, before she found her forever home in Corpus Christi. At the tender age of 18, she met the love of her life, Juan P. Sanchez, and together they embarked on a 67-year-long journey of companionship and mutual respect until his passing in 2015. Their love story was one for the ages, a true testament to commitment and enduring affection. Hilda's zest for life was matched by her sharp intellect and competitive nature. She spent many joyous years in Freer, Texas, where she enjoyed playing competitive games like Scrabble with her siblings in the afternoons.  Even after moving back to Corpus Christi, she continued her Scrabble games with her grandchildren, always reminding them that "there is no family in Scrabble" as she skillfully defeated them. Her competitive spirit was matched by her nurturing soul, as her home in Corpus Christi became a sanctuary of warmth and welcome, where the aroma of freshly made tortillas and the sound of hearty conversations filled the air. A woman of the earth, Hilda's hands brought forth life in her garden, tending to her beloved orange tree with the same care and attention she gave to her family. Her home was not just a structure of walls and a roof, but a haven where memories were cultivated and love was harvested in abundance. Hilda's intelligence was undeniable, her spirit unbreakable. She was a woman who never shied away from speaking her truth, engaging in lively debates with a fearlessness that was both admired and endearing. Her family often mused that she would have made a formidable FBI agent, given her inquisitive nature and passion for politics, which was vividly displayed during her year-long dedication to the O.J. Simpson trial. A pillar of her community, Hilda was a proud and active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church for over half a century. Her faith was as unwavering as her commitment to civic duty, exemplified by her consistent exercise of her right to vote and her advocacy for the causes she held dear.

As we celebrate the life of Hilda P. Sanchez, we remember a woman of intelligence and spirit, whose humor and love for life left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Her legacy is not one of sorrow but of motivation, a call to embrace life with courage, love with openness, and to always stand firm in one's convictions. Hilda's story is not one of an ending but a continuous source of inspiration, urging us to live fully, love deeply, and laugh heartily, just as she did.

Deuteronomy 31:8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
