Jose F. Rios Jr.

Mast. Gy. Sgt. (E9) Jose Rios Jr., a distinguished Marine veteran and dedicated family man, passed away on September 4, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on June 5, 1941, Jose's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his country, his family, and his community. He was a beloved father, brother, and uncle, leaving behind a legacy of strength, honor, and compassion.

Jose was a beloved father to Jose, Amanda, and Michelle. Jose grew up with a strong sense of duty, which was evident from his early years. He attended Roy Miller High School and later earned his GED, demonstrating his resilience and dedication to personal growth. His pursuit of education continued as he graduated from Park College on base, balancing his military service with academic achievement. His military career was nothing short of remarkable. Serving for over 27 years, Jose was a testament to courage and service. His time in combat took him to the front lines in Vietnam and Iraq, where he served with valor. Stationed in locations such as Okinawa, Japan, and the Philippines, he not only defended his nation but also embraced the cultures and communities he encountered. His martial arts expertise was recognized as he earned a fourth-degree black belt in both Judo and Karate, a discipline that he carried with pride throughout his life. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1991, Jose continued to serve his community in a different capacity. He joined the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked until his second retirement in 2009. His passion for helping others shone through his volunteer work, where he taught English, Spanish, and citizenship at the Corpus Christi Literacy Council on Greenwood. Jose was also an active member of the Marine Corps League and served on the Mayor's Committee for Veteran Affairs, advocating for his fellow servicemen and women. His interests outside of his service and family were a reflection of his vibrant personality. An avid fan of the Astros and the Cowboys, Jose's enthusiasm for his teams was infectious. He enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement of sports, often sharing these moments with friends and family. Mast. Gy. Sgt. (E9) Jose Rios Jr. lived a life of honor, bravery, and altruism. His impact on the lives he touched was profound, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. He embodied the values of the Marine Corps: honor, courage, and commitment, and his legacy will continue to resonate within the community and his beloved family.
