Joseph Charles Drennan of Freer, Texas went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Charlie was born August 31, 1933 in Hermleigh, Texas to William Joseph & Sadie Louvenia (Wilcox) Drennan. He married Linda Lea Clark on August 22, 1959 in Alice, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Frances Ann Drennan; parents; sister, MaeDell Drennan Amadeo; and brother, RH Drennan.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Linda, of 60 years; son, Joe Drennan (Lily) of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughters, Pam Turner (Jody) of Fredericksburg, Texas and Sugy Martinez (Leo) of Freer, Texas; grandchildren, Joe Drennan, Taylor Drennan Fowler (Sean), Deborah Drennan, Farrah Turner, Serena Martinez Alaniz (Benny), Audrey Turner, Madelyn Turner, and Madison Martinez; great-grandchildren, Kacey Ann Alaniz, Sadie Emma Fowler, and Joaquin Felix Alaniz; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Charlie went to college at Texas A& I University. He had various jobs in his lifetime; working on ranches, driving trucks in the oilfield, driving/training for J.B. Hunt, and working on drilling rigs. His one true passion that he always went back to was being a cowboy.
At the age of 6 years old he was introduced to the cowboy way of life and from then on, Charlie dreamed of being a cowboy one day. He learned to speak Spanish from a ranch cook and in later years became fluent in the language.
Charlie shared with family his memories of his mamma praying with him as a little boy. In later years, reflecting on his life, he also shared that he recognized how God had protected him throughout his life. There came a time when he realized that he needed a Savior and he surrendered his life to follow Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He had been a member of First Baptist Church of Freer since the early 1970’s.
Charlie was always willing to lend a helping hand and worked hard and had fun while doing it, loved and cared for his family and friends, and had the ability to tell a really good story which characterized the life of Charlie. He thought deeply about our country-freedom and our right to vote for a candidate of our choice. He campaigned for President Ronald Reagan, attended the Republican National Convention, and made some political tapes in Spanish that were broadcasted over the radio for President Reagan. He was invited to Washington DC to attend the Inaugural Ball. He felt just at home there as he was at the ranch on horseback or the local coffee shop. He was an amazing person, he loved people, and usually left them laughing.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, June 14, 2019, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Trevino Funeral Home, 120 E. Front St. Alice, TX; with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 PM, officiated by Bro. Tim Walshe.
