Obituary

Juan Manuel Mata, passed away on October 25, 2026, at the age of 73.

Juan Manuel Mata passed peacefully into eternal life on October 25, 2026, while surrounded by his wife and son, in Houston, Texas. Manuel will be remembered as a man whose greatest joy was his family. He was humble, respectful, honest, hardworking, generous, and always attentive to the needs of his family and friends.

Manuel was born on January 14, 1953, and lived a life marked by family, enduring connections, and the quiet pride of his roots. He attended Alice Independent School District and graduated with the very first Alice High School Class of 1971, where he played football and was forever a true Coyote fan. Shortly thereafter, he continued his education attending Del Mar College where he earned his degree as a Designer Engineer, a milestone that remained part of the story of his life and the community that helped shape him.

Manuel found great happiness in the things he loved like hunting, fishing, barbecuing, and working in his yard. He enjoyed listening to Tejano music and oldies, especially guitarist-singer Carlos Santana, singing his favorite song, “Black Magic Women”. Being a soccer referee and staying involved in his sons’ school and sports activities was another thing that gave him great pride and joy.

Manuel was a devoted fan of the Houston Astros and the Texans football team and proudly considered himself their number one fan.

Manuel is survived by the love of his life, his wife Oralia “Ora” Carrillo Davis; his sons, John Michael (Megan) Mata and Mario Andres Mata, who were his pride and joy; and his cherished grandchildren, Valkyrie Mata, Eliana Mata, Emma Mata, Scarlett Mata, John Maverick Mata, Vivian Mata, and Alexander Cole Mata, who were a special source of happiness in his life. He is also survived by his sisters, Maria Virginia Gutierrez, San Juanita Godines, and Maria Guadalupe “Lupita” Mata, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, Isidro and Maria Mata, and by his sister, Maria Elena (Ben) Correa.

Manuel’s family will receive condolences on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Treviño Funeral Home Alice, 120 E. Front St., from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM, with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Monday, November 2, 2026, from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM. A funeral cortege will depart at 9:30 AM to St. Joseph Catholic Church to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Roberson-Collins Memorial Cemetery, where Manuel will be laid to rest in the peace of Christ.

Honoring Manuel as pallbearers will be Martin Nunez, George Gutierrez, Sammy Gutierrez, Daniel Gutierrez, Mario Mata, and Carlos Salazar. Honorary pallbearers will be Alexander Cole Mata, John Maverick Mata, Vivian Mata, and Scarlett Mata.

Manuel’s memories will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate to have known him and loved him. Juan Manuel Mata will be remembered with love for his hardworking spirit, his devotion to home and family, and the quiet ways he filled life with care and constancy. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
