Lionel “Leo” Cortez, a cherished family man and beloved member of the San Benito community, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on September 26, 1943, in San Benito, Texas, Leo's zest for life and infectious smile left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Leo's journey through life was one marked by love, laughter, and the simple joys that make a life well-lived. He found his partner in Luz Kartchner, and together they navigated the waters of life with grace and companionship. Leo was a devoted father to his children, Alberica Garza (married to Ricardo), Leonor Cortez, and Leonel Cortez Jr. (married to Delilah). His love also extended to his stepchildren, Monica Lynn (married to Nicolas), Veronica Villanueva, and Kathy Moffet (married to Robert), and his stepsons, Frank Villanueva, Ernie Llamas (married to Kim), and Eric Lee. His siblings, Consuelo Galvan, Anita Booker, Fidel Cortez Jr. (married to Emmy), Raul Cortez (married to Yolanda), and Abel Cortez Sr. (married to Ofelia), will remember Leo's guidance and unwavering support. Leo's legacy is further carried on through the lives of his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to learn from the stories and lessons he shared. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and the love and values he instilled in them will resonate for generations to come. An avid outdoorsman, Leo's passion for fishing was second to none. He spent countless hours by the water, rod in hand, enjoying the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch. Dancing was another of Leo's joys, and he could often be found leading Luz across the dance floor with a grace that belied his years. His skill in shooting pool was well known, and he relished the friendly competition and camaraderie of the game. And, of course, Leo's appreciation for a cold Lone Star beer was a testament to his Texas roots and his ability to savor the simple pleasures in life. Leo's presence was a gift to those who knew him and his absence will be deeply felt. He was a man of integrity and warmth and an easy-going spirit that drew people to him. His laughter was a common sound at family gatherings, and his stories, often told with a twinkle in his eye, will be retold and cherished. As we bid farewell to Leo Cortez, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with him. His journey on this earth may have concluded, but his spirit remains alive in the love he gave, the wisdom he imparted, and the memories he created with all who were lucky enough to know him. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Leo Cortez will be missed, but the legacy of his love and the imprint of his life's joy will continue to inspire those he left behind. Rest in peace, Leo. Your journey was one of purpose, love, and joy, and we are all the better for having been a part of it.
