Luis "Lulo" Perez Ibanez, a cherished soul known for his courage, creativity, and thoughtfulness, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Born on November 17, 1947, in San Diego, Texas, Lulo was a man who embraced life’s challenges with resilience and a heart of gold. Lulo was preceded in death by his parents, Geronimo and Vicenta Ibanez; his brothers, Guillermo Norberto Ibanez and Ricardo Ibanez; and his sisters, Maria Guadalupe (Hermilo) Carreno and Sylvia (Lolo) Gonzalez; as well as his brother-in-law, Homero Lopez. He is survived by his loving family, Irma I. Lopez, Fr. Armando P. Ibanez, Geronimo H. Ybanez, and Elsa (David) I. Alvarez; sister-in-law, Edna M. Ibanez; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of dear friends who will forever cherish his memory. A proud alumnus of William Adams High School, Class of 1965, Lulo embarked on a career that exemplified his dedication to service. He worked as an assistant plumber for Carreno Plumbing, the City of Alice Utility Department, and concluded his professional journey with the Civil Service, where he retired after many years of devoted service. Despite battling polio from a young age, Lulo never allowed it to define him or hinder his ability to live a full and vibrant life. He was a true jack of all trades, discovering his artistic talent in the 7th grade when he won first place in a drawing competition. This sparked a lifelong passion for sketching, water coloring, and creating beautiful paintings that reflected the depth of his creative spirit. Lulo had an enduring love for Tejano music, the thrill of boxing, and was an ardent fan of his Dallas Cowboys. His favorite holiday was Easter, a time when his family would come together at his uncle's ranch for a celebration filled with music, laughter, reminiscing, joking, singing, and of course the breaking of cascarones.
He delighted in the simple pleasures of a well-cooked meal, whether it was a succulent ribeye steak, traditional menudo, homemade tamales, tacos, or his particular favorite, cabrito. Lulo's legacy is one of courage, having faced life's adversities with unwavering strength. His creativity left a tangible mark on the world through his art, generosity, thoughtfulness and the happiness he radiated. He was a protector, a giver, and a beacon of love of family. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him. Lulo’s memory will live on as a testament to a life well-lived and a man dearly loved.
Lulo’s family will receive condolences on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, at Trevino Funeral Home, 120 E. Front St.; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM.
