Mary Helen Duenes-Orona, a woman whose life was a testament to deep love, steadfast faith, and unwavering generosity, entered into eternal rest on November 14, 2025, at the age of 64. She passed peacefully after a courageous and long battle with kidney disease. Born on October 30, 1961, to Jose Vela Duenes Sr. and America Maxine Duenes, Mary Helen spent her 64 years filling the lives of those around her with warmth, laughter, and an open heart.
Mary Helen was greeted at the gates of heaven by the family members who preceded her in death, including her loving parents, Jose Vela Duenes Sr. and America Maxine (Baltazar) Duenes; her brothers, David Baltazar Duenes, Jose "Joedy" Duenes Jr., and Juan Duenes; and her sisters, Margarita Elizabeth "China" (Duenes) Vela, and Consuelo "Connie" (Duenes) Vasquez.
Her legacy of love lives on through her surviving children, Joseph Duenes, Jerry (Rosalynn) Duenes, and Melissa Ann Duenes; and her step-children, Michelle Longoria, Jessica Orona, and Daniel Orona. She leaves behind her precious 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, who were the absolute pride and joys of her life. One of ten children of "Momo" and "Popo," Mary Helen is also survived by her siblings: Daniel "Danny" Duenes, Rogelio (Pauline) Duenes, Delia Duenes, andLinda Duenes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Mary Helen was a devoted matriarch, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister who poured every ounce of her spirit into her family. As a dedicated stay-at-home mother, she found her greatest joy in nurturing her loved ones, particularly through her passion for cooking. She was known for ensuring everyone had a seat at her table, embodying her famous motto: her door was always open to anyone in need.A woman of vibrant faith and spirit, Mary Helen loved simple pleasures; engaging in lively games of Gin Rummy, attending church services, and cheering passionately for her favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. Her character was defined by kindness and generosity, but also by a wonderful sense of humor. She was a natural joker among family and friends, her infectious laughter a cherished memory for all who knew her. Her compassion extended beyond her immediate circle and she had a true passion for helping people every chance she could.Mary Helen Duenes-Orona’s presence was a gift to this world. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those she touched with her huge heart, unforgettable warmth, and generous spirit.
Mary Helen’s family will receive condolences on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at Treviño Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara St., with a Prayer Service to begin at 1:00 PM. A funeral cortege will depart shortly thereafter for Rite of Committal and Interment at Rose Hill Memorial Park, where Mary Helen will be laid to rest in the peace of Christ.
