Obituary

Monica Suzette Hughes passed into eternal life on Monday, March 30, 2026, in Houston, Texas. She was born in Alice, Texas to her parents, Roel and Susie Hughes, on September 11, 1975. Monica will be remember for her generosity, laughter, and love of family.

Monica lived for her children, they were the light of her life. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life and family unity was very important to her.

Monica loved life and had such a wonderful sense of humor; she was a joy to be around and enjoyed hanging out with friends and family. She had a gift for telling jokes and always had everyone in tears from laughter at every gathering.

Monica will be remembered for her love of animals. She loved her turtles as they brought peace and comfort to her as she watched them slowly moving around and interacting with each other.

Monica enjoyed going to casinos and playing the “maquinitas” (the slot machines). She would sit there with a glass full of crushed ice, chewing away as she excitingly waited to hit it big.

Monica enjoyed reminiscing over her younger days. Every time she gathered with family and friends she always said “Remember when?”, and then laughter would burst out. Monica will be truly missed by those who were fortunate to have known her and loved her.

Monica is survived by her children, Monique Oliverez, Manuel Olivares IV, and Marcus Olivarez; her grandchildren, Alan Olivarez and Milo Menchaca; her parents, Roel and Susie Hughes; her siblings, Herminia V. (Mario) Alfaro, Roy (Cristina) Hughes, and Randy (Andrea) Hughes; nieces, Kris (Veronica) Rios, Kayla (Robert Ramos) Alfaro, Isabella Hughes, and Desirae Hughes; nephew, Randy Hughes Jr.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

Monica is proceeded in death by her paternal grandparents, Raul and Hermina Hughes; maternal grandparents, Juan and Maria Reyna; the father of her children, Manuel Olivares III; and dear friend, David Preston.

Monica’s family will receive condolences on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Treviño Funeral Home Alice, 120 E. Front St, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 11:00 AM. Service will conclude in the chapel.
