Rene Antonio Zarate, Jr., affectionately known as "Pops," was born on August 4, 1965, in Alice, Texas, and he peacefully left this world on July 28, 2025, also in Alice. A dedicated family man, Rene built a life centered around love and unity, which he cherished deeply.
Rene was a proud graduate of the Alice Independent School District, completing his education at Alice High School Class of 1983. During his high school years, he showcased his talents not only as an outstanding baseball player, but also in athletics actively participating in track and playing baseball from pee-wee league all the way through college. His love for the game continued as he furthered his studies at South Most College in Brownsville, Texas, where he also played baseball.
Following in his father's footsteps, Rene became a vital part of the family business, Mr. Z’s Paint and Body. With unwavering dedication, he devoted his life to creating his artwork while mastering the trade. Rene’s kind and hardworking nature was a hallmark of his character; he was known for his wonderful sense of humor and his ability to connect with everyone he met. Always generous, he was the type of person who would gladly give his shirt off his back to help those in need.
Rene was a talented cook, famed for his culinary skills in preparing beloved family dishes such as carne guisada, chicken flautas, and mushroom meatballs, which brought joy to family gatherings. He enjoyed barbecuing while relaxing with a cool Budweiser and listening to music, creating memories that his family will forever cherish.
His greatest pride and joy came from his children and grandchildren, whom he adored deeply. He is survived by his parents, Rene and Gloria Zarate Sr.; his children, Rene Antonio (Christina Martinez) Zarate III, Ryan Scott (Clare Rios) Zarate, and Savannah (Homer) Martinez; his siblings, Leonel (Rosabel) Zarate, Paul Gerald (Belinda) Zarate, Rosie (Mando) Abrigo, Raquel Zarate, his beloved brother-in-law, Mel and Hernandez family; his beloved grandchildren, Zoey Rhea, Scarlett Ry, Zander Scott, Anthony, Adelynn Renee, Isaac, Chevelle Rayne, and Greyson; the mother of his children, Pamela Lake; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and his beloved furry companion affectionately named Texas.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Pablo and Manuela Zarate, and maternal grandparents, Gerardo and Concepcion Trevino.
