Ricardo “Richard” Cantu passed away on March 5, 2022, at the age of 57, in his hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas. His battle with colon cancer the past two years showed his courage, strength, and determination in facing the biggest challenges head-on. Despite his diagnosis, he never let that hold him back from the things he loved most in life – fishing, cooking, and hanging out with his “Little Man,” Liam.
Richard was born on August 18, 1964, and attended Mary Carroll High School. Over the last 30 years, he became a jack of all trades; owning his own business in home contracting & remolding. Richard was a true craftsman and extremely passionate about the quality and care of his work.
Richard loved living in Corpus, and you could often find him at “his spot” at Packery Channel on kayaks or the beach enjoying a day of fishing. And if he wasn’t fishing, he was sharing good
times with his friends and loved ones, hosting parties, shooting darts, and cooking the best BBQ & Tex-Mex dishes. He will be remembered as an extremely giving and helpful friend, always stepping up to help whenever the call came.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Victoria Cantu and husband, Israel Lopez; son, Liam J. Cantu (age 8); mother, Olga Cantu; sisters, Maria Cortez and husband, Miguel “Mike” Cortez, Susie Cantu and husband, Jorge Sanchez, and Esther Cantu; brother, Paul Spencer Cantu; mother of Victoria, Heather Dixon; and numerous close friends and loved ones. He was preceded in passing by his father, Joe Sr.; brother, Jose “Joe” Cantu Jr.; sister, Maria “Elizabeth” Isabel Cantu; and mother of Liam, Jennifer Farrell.
Richard will be honored in a beach-side celebration of life on March 27, 2022, starting at 2 PM at the Briscoe King Pavilion on Padre Island. A service will begin at 5:30 PM with a short ash scattering ceremony to follow during sunset.
In lieu of flowers, Richard’s children request donations to assist Victoria in caring for Liam moving forward. They both greatly appreciate your support as they navigate this new world together.
