Richard L Moreno

Richard Lechuga Moreno passed away on January 24, 2019 at the age of 72. He was born to Casiano and Pauline Moreno on September 3, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Christopher Gabriel Moreno; parents-in-law, Edwardo & Minerva Cervantes; brothers, George Moreno, Jimmy Moreno, Guillermo Moreno, and Ronnie Peña; nephew, Rudy Hinojosa, Jr.; sister-in-law, Dora Almazan; and brothers-in-law, Joe Perez, Jesse Garcia.

He is survived by his son, John Edward Moreno; grandson, Christopher Gabriel Moreno; brothers, Manuel (Teresa) Moreno, Robert (Olivia) Moreno, and Larry (Anna) Peña; sister, Christina (Rosendo) Resendez; sisters-in-law, Dora Moreno, Kathy Moreno, and Diana Moreno; his Cervantes family, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1971 Richard married Mary Alice Cervantes and together they started their family. During his life, Richard achieved many accomplishments. Among those was his dedicated service to the United States Army; for which he served in three tours of Vietnam as a Field Medic and on the Rat Patrol. During his tours, Richard often went above and beyond his call of duty. Time and again, he fed the Vietnamese children because he could not tolerate seeing them hungry and he gave them candy and gifts to brighten their day. Despite not having experience delivering babies, he once delivered an infant when a little boy led him to his mother who was in labor. Richard earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and numerous service awards throughout his military service. He retired from the military with an honorable discharge and a 91 Charlie (Field Nurse) designation. He then completed a vocational nursing license at Del Mar College and subsequently worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) at Spohn Shoreline for three years. He later went on to work for the United States Postal Service and became well known for his continued volunteerism. Richard was a proud Scoutmaster for his son’s new Boy Scout Troop in the Casa de Manana Community in Corpus Christi. He regularly assisted homeless military veterans with completing benefits paperwork and made sure that they had basic living necessities; such as, blankets, coats, socks, and food. You could often count on him to organize benefit barbecues for friends & family and he dedicated his time to organizations such as AmeriCorps and The American Red Cross. He was recognized by the American Red Cross with the Morgan Jefferson Volunteer Award.

Richard was a remarkable citizen. He will be deeply missed and remembered by his family and friends for the love, humility, and service to others that he demonstrated throughout his life. The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff at the San Rafael Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Corpus Christi; to his beloved sister-in-law, Margaret, her husband, Rudy Hinojosa, and their family for the extraordinary care they provided to Richard.
