Ruben Romero Martinez

Ruben Romero Martinez returned home on February 13, 2025, after traveling around the sun 86 times. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on January 20, 1939.

He attended Ray High School until he signed up for the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Bitburg, Germany as a radio operator where he met Ingeborg Krieg, who would become his wife of 64 years. They returned to Corpus Christi from Germany, and after an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, Ruben started working to provide for his family. He trained to be a pipe fitter at Reynolds Aluminum and eventually ended up in the lab testing samples. He dedicated 40 years of shift work to take care of his wife and two daughters.

Ruben was an avid sports fan, actually scheduling vacation time to watch the World Cup. He frequently attended high school games and professional games whenever possible. He was fan of many teams, with the exception of the Dallas Cowboys. He had recently said the only way the Cowboys are going to the Super Bowl is if they buy tickets! He could also recall statistics about players and coaches with amazing detail.

Beside family and sports, Ruben loved to fish, often stopping on his way home from work to dip a hook. After retirement, he would get up well before sunrise to try his luck on a pier or jetty along the bay. With him it wasn't luck as much as skill, he always managed to catch something.

Ruben had a large circle of friends, some since grade school. He kept in touch with coworkers with monthly morning coffee "meetings". As his friends passed from this life, he would recall stories of their youthful "adventures".

For many years he attended daily mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church until arthritis in his knees became too painful.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Antonia Martinez; his brothers, John and Ray; his sister, Mary Alice; and his daughter, Danyela Hec. He is survived by his wife, Inge; his daughter, Victoria Magee, and son-in-law, Dewey Magee; four grandkids, Danyela White (Chris), Katrina Hec McCoy (James), Joshua Hec (Sarinna), and Danika Hec (Matthew Rodriguez); and four great-grandchildren, Charlize and Holden Linebrink, Kynlee Hec, and Alice Hec.

Always a jovial and gregarious man, he will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
