“We know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself.”
2 Corinthians 5:1
Ruben Torres, aged 82, peacefully passed from his earthly home to his Heavenly mansion on January 19, 2017. He was born January 25, 1934 to Reynaldo and Maria Torres in Runge, Texas. His parents, his brother Esau, and his sister Elisa await him in heaven. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Olga; his son, Ruben (Celina); and daughter, Patricia Annette. His grandchildren are Nathan (Shanea), Victoria Elissa, Daniel (Dinah), Christian (Chris) and Ruben III; great-grandchildren Daniel III and Liam (Daniel II), Elijah and Madison(Victoria), Zabdiel (Nathan), and Aalianna (Ruben III). He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Isaac (Norma), Jacobo, Emma (Tom) Kammerer, Elida Cruz; and his nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
Growing up in Alice, he worked numerous jobs meeting many people along the way. He shined shoes on the corner of Cameron and Main St. next to the Hotel Alice. He drove a dump truck during the west Hwy 44 construction when his Dad became ill. Ruben began his Law Enforcement career in the late 50's by joining the Alice Police Department as a dispatcher at the upstairs Police Station on Wright and First St. He was a member of the Texas Army National Guard, the United States Army Reserve, and the United States Marine Corp Reserve. He was an employee with the United States Postal Service, delivering mail on foot to the homes of those living in the area of Washington to Schallert and Gibson Streets. He was an Investigator with the 79th Judicial District of Texas and later Chief Deputy with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department. During his illustrious career he maintained an entrepreneurs vision by owning a Janitorial Service and a Security business which he later named Torres Security Service.
A current member of Stonegate Baptist Church, he grew up a Christian, met people from all walks of life, worked hard, had strong ties to the family, and got along easily with people. He was a humble man who was good natured, generous, and gave others the benefit of doubt. He always said, “treat others as you would like to be treated”. That held true because during his life he saw the best and the worst in people, yet he easily related to others no matter what their walk of life; and coupled with his commanding presence in times of crisis, he became very effective in de-escalating situations. He treated others as he himself would want to be treated. GOD put him on this earth for a reason; he changed lives and he brought out the good in others.
Ruben travelled extensively during his lifetime. He hunted in Africa, in Canada, and toured with his wife in Germany, Switzerland, China, Hong Kong, England, Singapore, Japan, Soviet Union, Hawaii, Alaska, Thailand, Scotland, Italy, and many other places. His hobbies included flying his Cessna 150, riding his motorcycle with the Blue Knights, rebuilding his trucks, hunting, and most of all working at his ranch.
Ruben, raised with strong Christian beliefs, family values, and a “hard work” ethic was a believer, assured by faith that there is another happy life in our Father’s house.
