Ruben Vela, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2023, in Brownsville, Texas. Born on June 9, 1944, in Robstown, Texas, to Rafael and Ramona Vela, Ruben lived a life that was rich with love, laughter, and the joy of simple pleasures. Despite having only a third-grade education, Ruben was a self-taught man of many talents and an exemplary hard worker. His trade was ranch work, where he excelled with his ability to fix anything that came his way. His dedication and unwavering commitment to his work were a testament to his character, earning him the respect and admiration of those who knew him. He was a trustworthy man, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Ruben was also a man of exquisite taste, known far and wide for his culinary skills. He was renowned for his chili piquin hot sauce, homemade tortillas, and refried beans that were second to none. His barbeque was always the highlight of family gatherings, filling the air with a tantalizing aroma that brought everyone together. Ruben also found joy in raising fighting roosters and various farm animals, which further demonstrated his love for life and nature. Another thing he took pride in doing was driving the farm truck while delivering products. Ruben's love for his family was boundless. He was predeceased by his parents, Rafael and Ramona Vela; his son, Ruben Vela Jr.; his sisters, Paulita and Esther Vela; and brothers, Reynaldo and Juan David Vela. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Linda Lee Vela; his daughters, Diana (Lucas) Arevalo and Elisa (Samuel) Olmos; and sons Reynaldo (Yolanda) Vela, Seferino Vela, Marcos Candelario Vela, and Ruben Lee Vela. He also leaves behind his sister, Maria (Alfredo) Robledo, and a multitude of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Ruben was a man of great humor, always ready with a joke or a funny story to lighten the mood. His laughter was infectious, and he had a knack for making everyone around him feel at ease. His favorite pastime was listening to music, which he often did while spending quality time with his grandchildren, whom he adored. Ruben Vela was a generous, loving, and handy individual whose impact on his family and community will not be forgotten. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those he touched with his kindness, humor, and love. His life was a testament to the power of hard work, the joy of simple pleasures, and the importance of family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ruben’s family will receive condolences on Friday, July 21, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at Trevino Funeral Home, 120 E. Front St. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM followed by Liturgy of the Word. Inurnment to follow at a later date.
