Virginia B. Sherwood, 91, of Corpus Christi, Texas, departed this world on Tuesday, June 29, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She has been reunited with her loving parents, Daniel and Guadalupe Vera; her beloved son, Edward Elliot Brodhag; her beautiful sisters, Irene Vera and Velia Usimaki; and her furry friends, Jake, Serena, and the many four-legged friends she cherished throughout her long and amazing life.
Virginia was born to Guadalupe and Daniel Reyes Vera on May 2, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas. She grew up in South Texas, graduating from Corpus Christi High School as a Buccaneer in 1949, and went off to study nursing school; only to learn she wanted something more in life. She met and married Richard Brodhag, with whom she raised four children.
Later, in her single years, after the children were grown, she took on the role as a devoted caregiver to her mother, Guadalupe, while working full time at Lichtenstein's and then later at General Tire, and then at Goldstein's where she would retire. The two would often enjoy a nightcap after a long hard day's work. On one faithful evening, with only two bucks in their pockets, her mother talked her into going out for a drink at the local dance hall, The Western Palms, where, to this day, Grandpa Mel jokingly swears she put the 'ojo' on him. Others say the stars in the universe simply aligned, and the rest would be history.
She spent her time working in a garden nursery while enjoying her time with her grandchildren, her mother, her daughter, and her husband. Backyard parties and many convention trips were taken, many friends were made, and a whole lot of Avon was sold. She enjoyed reading Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, listening to country music, being a member of her local Bonsai group, watching Wonder Woman, and eating Mac's BBQ. She was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys with the Green Bay Packers coming in at a close, but not so close, second. Many knew her as Virginia, but she was also known to others as Nana, Momma, Mom, Honey, and best friend.
She leaves behind her husband of nearly 40 years, Milton P. Sherwood, to cherish the many loving memories the two of them had together. She is survived by daughters, Rose B Surita and Beverly Kemper; son, Daniel Brodhag; daughter, Susanna Covarrubia (Guillermo); and sons, Sergio (Velia) and Francisco Sherwood. Along with her children, she leaves eight grandchildren, Jessica Surita Garza (Abel), Justus Brodhag, Rachel Surita Monreal (Philip), Leann Brodhag, Belinda Johnson (Brad), Breeanna Montalvo, Andres Martinez (Diana), and Sam Kemper; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren to carry on her legacy. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Debbie, Diane, Mike, and Mark; brother-in-law, David Usimaki; along with other numerous nieces, nephews, and special cousins, and lifelong friends, Yvonne Hawthorne, Gracie Deleon, and Connie.
The family will receive condolences on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara @ Port Ave, Corpus Christi, TX, from 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM; with a Celebration of Life to begin at 9:30 AM. Following, a funeral cortege will depart the funeral home at 10:30 AM for Rite of Committal and Interment at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, located at 9974 I-37, Corpus Christi, 78410.
Daniel Brodhag, Andres D Martinez, Raymond A Cardona, Isaak N Munoz, Philip Monreal, Brad Johnson, Sam Kemper, and Drew Martinez will have the highest honor of serving as pallbearers.
''A light from our family is gone, a voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in the home which can never be filled. We have to mourn the loss of the one we would have loved to keep, but God who surely loved her best, has finally made her sleep. After a lifetime of her love and joy, and music filled our ears, God leaves these wondrous memories, to help us through our tears.''
