Chester C. Compton, Sr.

Chester C. Compton Sr., a cherished patriarch and beacon of laughter, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on May 7, 2024, at the age of 96 in Alice, Texas. Chester's journey began as the son of George and Lila Frances Elizabeth Compton on October 8, 1927, in Poteet, Texas. Chester's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of joy and camaraderie that he cultivated throughout his years.

Chester was a proud veteran having served as a sergeant in both the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. His time in the military saw him working as an auto mechanic assistant, a role that reflected his lifelong affinity for hands-on work and problem-solving. Following his distinguished service, Chester's career was largely centered in the oilfield industry, where he was known for his strong work ethic and amiable nature. His tenure with Williams Drilling Company, Flournoy Oilfield Company, and various other entities in the sector was marked by the respect and friendship he garnered from colleagues and associates alike. Beyond his family and service, Chester was a man of many interests. He relished the times spent barbequing and hosting family gatherings, where his wonderful sense of humor was always the highlight of the event. An avid player of Dominos and card games, Chester's competitive yet jovial nature made every game a memorable one. His favorite pastime, saltwater fishing on the coast, was a serene counterpoint to his otherwise lively pursuits. And through it all, his faithful German Shepherd, Tiller, was never far from his side, a constant companion in both quiet moments and bustling family affairs. Chester was preceded in death by the his wife, the love of his life, Eloyse Althea Compton; his parents, George and Lila Compton; sister, Helen Howard; sons, George Floyd Compton and Felipe Arriaga; and son-in-law, Tom Williams.

He is survived by his children, Joyce Rotge, Janet Williams, Chester (Derinda) Compton Jr., Helen (Clarence) Buendel, Flora (Chris) Berry, and John (Carrie) Compton; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; extended family; and his faithful German Shepherd, Tiller. As we bid farewell to Chester C. Compton Sr., we celebrate a life of a man who was funny, spirited and thoughtful, who touched so many with his unwavering warmth and boundless affection. His legacy will live on through the stories told, the games played, and the family he adored. Chester will be profoundly missed yet forever remembered as a man who made the world a brighter and more joyful place.
