Donald James Shirley, a devoted husband, father, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023, in Corpus Christi, TX, at the age of 75. Born on July 4, 1947, in Corpus Christi, TX, he was the son of the late Willie Mae and Gerald Shirley.
Donald was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Shirley, and brother, Monsignor Richard Shirley. He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Anita Shirley; his son, Justin Shirley (Yvonne); his siblings, Peggy Shirley Fritz, Gerald Shirley (Mary), Judy Shirley Rogers, Thomas Shirley (Lynne), and Mary Salinas (Arturo). Donald was a beloved uncle to 15 nieces and nephews, and a cherished great-uncle to 39 grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as a great grandniece and great grandnephew. He will be deeply missed by his special friends and extended family.
Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to saving lives as a first responder, working as a paramedic and firefighter. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his professional life, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
In his early years, Donald enjoyed photography, capturing memories and the beauty of the world around him. As a talented handyman, he could often be found fixing things around the house or working on projects for friends and family. He was a faithful church member, attending services regularly and contributing to the spiritual growth of his community.
Donald's life was a testament to his strong work ethic, dedication to his family, and unwavering commitment to his community. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to go the extra mile for those he cared about.
We will forever cherish the memories we shared with Donald and draw strength from the love he had for his family and friends. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, compassion, and devotion that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Donald James Shirley, you will be greatly missed, but your spirit will live on in the hearts of those you touched throughout your remarkable life. Rest in peace, dear husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
Donald’s family will receive condolences on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara @ Port Ave. from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A funeral cortege will depart the funeral home on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 10:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:00 AM at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5620 Gollihar Rd. Rite of Committal and Interment with full military honors will follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
