James K. Cantu, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away in his hometown of Corpus Christi on August 4, 2023. Born on September 5, 1963, James, known for his loving and friendly nature, left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Placido G. and Glafira L. Cantu; brothers, Robert and Rolando J. Cantu; in-laws, Jesse Lee and Zulema C. Villanueva; and sisters-in-law, Iluminada G. Cantu and Sylvia F. Cantu.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Vivian Villanueva Cantu; his daughters, Jessica Cantu (Christian Munoz) and Jennifer Cantu; his son, Daniel Miles (Amanda) and their children, Lilah and Sadie Miles; his dogs, Tucker and Jade; his siblings, Luis Cantu, Jose H. Cantu (Maria), Mario X. Cantu, Virginia M Randal, Caesar A. Cantu (Deanna), Lynda S. Feeny (Michael), Oliver C. Cantu (Lora), and Raul R. Cantu (Valerie); sister-in-law, Terri Cantu; in-laws, Sue Ann Tijerina (Paul), Jesse Lee Villanueva (Esther), Thomas Villanueva (Elizabeth); aunts and uncles, Santos Ronje (Mary Jane), Mary Del Chavez, and Azucena L. Perez; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In 1991, James met his wife, Vivian, while working at H-E-B. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in a beautiful wedding in Las Vegas in 2002. They reaffirmed their commitment to each other in 2011, through a church ceremony at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Their love was a testament to their shared values of commitment, love, and family.
James was a proud graduate of Mary Carroll class of 1982. Following his education, he served in the Marine Corps from 1982-1986, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his country. After his service, James built a successful career as a System Analyst for the Education Service Center, Region II. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated professional who brought a positive energy to the workplace.
James was a man of many interests. He was an avid Houston Astros fan and enjoyed working on cars with his youngest daughter, Jennifer. He had a fascination with technology and loved to fly drones. James also had a deep appreciation for music, particularly from the 70s and 80s. He was a big fan of Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Chicago, and Elton John. His love for music was infectious and often brought joy to those around him.
James will be remembered for his warm heart, friendly demeanor, and commitment to his family and friends. His memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and in the many lives he touched throughout his lifetime. James K. Cantu will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever be a beacon of love and friendship for all who knew him.
James’ family will receive condolences on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara @Port Ave, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Visitation and a Holy Rosary will continue that evening from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 710 S. 19th St, with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A funeral cortege will depart the funeral home at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 11, 2023, for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11:00 AM. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery with military honors.
