Jose Hernandez Obituary

Jose Hernandez passed away peacefully on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the age of 81 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born February 29, 1940 in Bishop, Texas to Natalio and Francisca Hernandez. 

Jose served proudly in the United States Army starting in 1960 as a Pvt E-1 and ended his term in 1966 as SP4E4, at which time he received his Honorable Discharge. His medals of decoration include: Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin), Sharpshooter (.45 Cal Pistol),  First Class Gunner (M60 MG),  and Expert (Bayonet). On July 5, 1979 he received a Certificate of Commendation from the Headquarters of the SPT Company 2nd Battalion (Mech) 141st Infantry as a Specialist of four years for Outstanding Accomplishments in connection with Unit Armorer, during AT.79 Fort Polk, La. Jose also participated in the Vietnam War Airborne. On January 26, 1980 Jose graduated from San Antonio College with a Certificate for Basic Commissioned Security Officer Training Program sponsored by Alamo Area Law Enforcement Academy. In 1983 Jose became a Life Time Member of the National Guard Association of Texas and in 1995 he received a Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Contributions Dedication and Effort at Gulf Plains Plant during a time of Crisis.
 
Jose worked with BG Cornelius Construction Company for many years as a Heavy Equipment Operator. After he retired he enjoyed working on his yard and spending time with his good friend, Valentin Colmenero. Jose was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
 
He is preceded in death by his parents, Natalio and Francisca Hernandez; his brothers, Juan Hernandez, Jesus Hernandez, and Ruben Martinez, and his sister, Josephina Piseno.
 
Among those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 45 years, Evangelina Hernandez; sons, Johnny Ray Hernandez, Oscar Hernandez, and Estevan Hernandez; daughters, Melissa Hernandez, Merlinda Hernandez, and Jennifer Hernandez; brothers, Jaime Alejandro Hernandez and Adrian Lee Hernandez; sisters, Anna Marie Gunter, Francisca Hernandez, Flora Gonzalez, Elinora Mechell, Minerva Cantu, and Yolanda Gonzalez,  Special nephews and care givers, Cisco Roberto Rodriguez, Calob Jay Rodriguez, and Lando Rene Rodriguez; special niece and care giver, Raquel Zarate; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Interment with full military honors will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, TX.
 
Honoring Jose as pallbearers are Cisco Roberto Rodriguez, Calob Jay Rodriguez, Landon Rene Rodriguez, Jose Oscar Hernandez, Matthew Martinez, and Johnny Ray Hernandez. 
 
Face masks must be worn, and social distancing must be practiced while attending funeral services due to the current pandemic.
