Obituary

Jose Luis Villegas Sr. was born on January 19, 1949, in Corpus Christi, TX to Trinidad Jimenez and Francisco Villegas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cruz Villegas; daughter, Elizabeth; sons, Richard, Edward, and Jose Luis Jr.; his parents; and his sister, Lydia J. Alejandro.

He is survived by his companion wife, Guadalupe Arredondo; daughters, Christina V. Barrera (Manuel), Carolina Villegas, and bonus daughter, Julie Rangel (Marco); special nieces, Janie Alejandro, Sandra Alejandro, Maria Lydia Rodriguez (Manuel), and nephew Juan Alejandro; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous family and friends whom he treasured.

Joe was a 1967 graduate of Roy Miller High School and still was proud to have been a Buccaneer. After 26 years of dedicated service, he retired from the City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department in 2009, where he worked as a supervisor and was a shop Steward for the union. This is where he earned the title "Smokin’ Joe" because of his determination in the fight to gain fair treatment and improve working conditions for the city’s employees. He was a very hardworking man and a great provider for his family.

Joe loved and was proud of his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with them watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys and Miller Bucs. He will be remembered for his famous barbeque, his smile, and mischievous giggles; always telling jokes and stories about his life and family.

He loved listening to oldies and watching old movies, mostly westerns. He never lost his sense of humor and made sure everyone he met heard one of his jokes. His favorite quote was calling you a wise guy when you thought you were being funny.

He will be dearly missed and will forever live in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Jose’s family will receive condolences on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Trevino Funeral Home, 3006 Niagara @Port Ave, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM; with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A funeral cortege will depart the funeral home on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11:30 AM.
