Maria Olga Rivas passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024, in Alice, Texas. Born on August 31, 1938, in Mission, Texas, she was a woman of exceptional courage, thoughtfulness, and had a caring heart.
Maria Olga was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Reynaldo Rivas Sr.; her parents, Aurelio and Elia Gonzalez; and her sister, Rosa Enna Hickey. Her spirit is carried on by her sons, Reynaldo "Rey" (Janie) Rivas, Antonio Rivas, Ronnie Rivas, and Michael Rivas; her brother, Aurelio "Bruno" Gonzalez; her sister, Norma Isabel Bird; her adored grandchildren, Veronica Benavides, Reynaldo "Rey" Rivas III, and Maddie Rivas; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Though Maria Olga's formal education concluded in middle school, she embodied the spirit of lifelong learning and instilled the importance of education to her sons. She often said, "Education is your freedom," urging her sons to pursue their studies for a bright and secure future.
Maria Olga's priority was always her family. She filled the roles of both mother and father after the loss of her husband. Teaching her sons the life values of respect, integrity, honesty, hard work, and to always keep the faith. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and a source of endless pride. She loved and enjoyed Kenny Rogers' music and she could often be heard singing along with a beautiful smile.
Maria Olga's home had an open door to friends and family and her kitchen was the heart of her hospitality, famous for her mouth-watering tamales, pan de polvo, bar-b-que, and all the holiday meals. She rejoiced at every family gathering with laughter in the comfort of being surrounded by loved ones.
A profound pillar of her life was her faith. An active member of St Joseph Catholic Church, Maria Olga's trust in God's will was unshakeable. It gave her the strength to face life's adversities with courage and serenity.
She was the embodiment of thoughtfulness, always ready to extend a helping hand and offer a word of wisdom. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and the enduring power of faith. Maria Olga's memory will continue to be a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
